About Greenwood House

What started as a community nursing home for the aged back in 1939, Greenwood House is now a comprehensive provider of wellness-focused senior lifestyles and health care services that includes skilled nursing care, rehabilitation services, assisted living, homecare services and hospice care.

Care with a Higher Purpose.

As a not-for-profit, mission-based community, we hold ourselves to a higher standard when it comes to caring for our residents. For nearly eight decades, this commitment has been evident in both the quality and scope of health care services we offer and in the vibrant lifestyle we provide to all those who turn to us for care – both inside and outside of our community.

Care for Today – and Tomorrow.

With compassion and a person-centered approach, we offer a wide range of services including skilled nursing care, assisted living, rehabilitation, homecare services and hospice care. No matter which of our services is needed, we focus on the social, emotional and spiritual well-being of each and every person who turns to us for care and support. Our residents and patients experience the highest quality of life possible in a caring atmosphere that promotes dignity, empathy, compassion and hope. It’s what sets Greenwood House apart. It’s what makes us special.

Our Heritage

At Greenwood House, we believe it is important to observe Jewish cultural and religious traditions. Religious services, led by a Rabbi or Cantor, are held twice a week in our skilled nursing center. As an organization, we celebrate all Jewish holidays with services and traditional meals. Community and school groups often join our residents for special holiday celebrations.

OUR HISTORY

More than a half century ago, the women of the Trenton Ladies Sick Benefit Society, a charitable and humanitarian organization, recognized the need in the community for a Home for elderly Jewish people who required medical, nursing and personal care in a secure environment. In 1939, they purchased and renovated a spacious home on Greenwood Avenue and named it the Home for the Aged Sons and Daughters of Israel.

In 1974, the community changed its name to Greenwood House Home for the Jewish Aged and was relocated to the current Ewing Township location. The goal was to provide skilled nursing care for 60 residents. As the community’s needs continued to grow, a new wing was added in 1980, expanding the Home’s capacity to 122 residents.

In 1992, the community was refurbished and a special care unit was added bringing capacity to 132 residents.

In 2002, Greenwood House’s skilled nursing home was renamed to honor the Marcus family and is now called the Robert and Natalie Marcus Home for the Jewish Aged.

In 2003, a 16-unit, 20-bed assisted living community was added offering one- and two-bedroom apartments – along with a host of convenient services and amenities – for those not yet ready for a skilled care center.

In 2006, we added 10 more beds to our skilled center and five apartments were added to The Abrams Residence assisted living community.

Homemaker services and hospice care were also added to our continuum of care.

21ST CENTURY VISION

As we move forward, Greenwood House will continue to grow and change as needs and trends evolve. Our vision for the future is to promote a resident-centered network of seamless, multidisciplinary, integrated services with a continued focus on preventive care, wellness and maximum independence. We want Greenwood House to be known as a health care organization offering a broad range of programs, lifestyles and services for seniors.

In designing our future, we will continue to identify areas and types of need, explore potential new business lines and develop and execute a progressive and aggressive technology strategy. We will continue to embrace change to ensure we create the right environment for tomorrow’s senior population.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to provide the highest quality of care and services to seniors and those we serve in an atmosphere of compassion and dignity, based on Jewish traditions and values. We support clients’ quality of life by offering opportunities for social, emotional and spiritual engagement.
